Where I’m going

The planned itinerary, as it stands:

although this is subject to change depending what I find to do along the way…

  • 16th August 2007 - Fly from Heathrow to Jo’burg – whoop whoop! off I go!
  • 17th August ’til early September – Jo’burg, then off on the ‘Baz Bus’ around the coast to Capetown via the Drackensberg mountains, Durban and the garden route.
  • September ’til early October – Capetown and the Cape winelands – I am setting up a few winery visits myself, but if anyone has any recomendations do let me know.
  • 9th October – A quick hop back to Jo’burg to fly on to Perth, and the Australian leg of the journey begins…
  • The rest of October – Touring round Western Australia, Margaret River is a must
  • End of October - Fly to Adelaide
  • November and December – In an order yet to be decided, I’ll be visiting: Clare valley, the Barossa valley, McLaren vale, the Yarra valley and ending up in Sydney for Christmas and New Year where I’ll be working back in a wine shop – Kemenys in Bondi.
  • Early January 2008 – Down to Tasmania for 10 days, hopefully meeting up with a fellow ex-oddbins mate of mine for a bit of their top notch fizz…
  • Mid January – Fly to Christchurch – I’ll be in New Zealand the longest and hope to find a job or jobs working through the 2008 vintage. I’ll start in the South and intend to do all the extreme sport-type things that backpackers tend to do there
  • February to May – settle down in Wairarapa where I will be working at Matahiwi both in the vines, and then once the grapes are in, I will be helping out in the winery. As well as working, I’ll be visiting as many wineries, and tasting as many wines as I can – all in the name of research dear reader!
  •  end of May - After the vintage has settled down, and the work dries up, I’ll be heading up to Auckland with Amber before I fly to Santiago…
  • June - Chile and Argentina with a couple of friends from Home. Starting off in Santiago, jetting around to see the Iguazu falls before returning to Buenos Aires.

  • July – August - continue on my own back inland to visit fellow wine-blogger Aaron Epstein in Mendoza, before heading North into Bolivia, and then back down the other side of the Andes to where I started in South America – Santiago! should be a hell of a loop… from here I’ll fly to Sao Paulo for a couple of weeks in Brazil…
  • mid-August 2008 - Fly back to the UK from Rio!

If anyone would like to suggest places to go along the way, or if any Winery owners want to offer me work (I have working holiday visas for both Australia and New Zealand) then please get in touch by either emailing me at alex@winetraveller.net or by leaving a comment.
