Flagstone Weather Girl 2006

Well, in the second of my catch up ‘wine of the week’ to bring me up to date, after acouple of more affordable wines, I am unashamedly going for something rather exclusive…

here starts my new fascination for weathergirls…

The Weather Girl is a Semillon Sauvignon blend made by Bruce Jack of Flagstone, especially for the Cape Winemakers Guild annual auction. We were lucky enough to get a sneak preview at the ‘Grapes, Gourmet and Gallery’ in Cape Town. Where it went stunningly well with the ‘Marinated springbok loin with pawpaw salsa’ -the fresh zesty style of the pawpaw setting off the citrus flavours in the wine.

springbok on a plate…a much better place for it than on a rugby shirt!

It is stunning with lemon citrus and cut grass on the nose, with a steely mineral edge in the mouth and fantastic length.  The fruit comes from Elim, along the coast near Hermanus, the famous Whale watching town, and with a cooler climate, produces excellent clean white styles.

We liked it so much on our table, that we bought the half dozen that were being sold in the charity auction half way through the evening.

If you like the sound of ‘The Weather Girl’ and want to get your hands on some, you are going to have to get bidding yourself, this years Cape Winemakers Guild auction starts at 9am on 6th October in Somerset West, but if you can’t get there yourself, they do take telephone bids… but I’m not letting on what we paid!!
