After leaving the bustle of Pretoria for the hills, not much wine passed my lips… I did try the one and only available behind the bar at Amphitheatre backpackers, and whilst being surprisingly palatable, it still didn’t qualify for a recommendation!
What the Amphitheatre bar lacked in wine list, it made up for in cocktail menu! In addition to ordering from the menu, the guys like to get the party started each night by offering a choice between pudding or the cocktail of the day… needless to say, they don’t get through many puddings!
So, instead of a wine of the week, here’s one of their house cocktails for you to try (for those of you with a sweet-tooth!)
Ingredients:
1 shot vodka
1 shot red grenadine
1 shot blue curucao
Orange juice
Crushed ice
Take one large showy glass, pour in vodka and grenadine, fill glass with crushed ice, carefully add OJ and then blue curucao to create layered effect – it should take on the look of the Rasta flag, going from red at the bottom, yellow in the middle and green on top…
Then top up with more ice, add a staw, or several, and plenty of umbrellas, shiny things, a sparkler and any other gaudy crap you find laying around!
et voila! instant Del-Boy!

Glad to see you enjoying your “wine” odyssey Sir Bazeley. You’re missing out on a Syrah/Shiraz tasting at Topoli tonight – will let you know the outcome. By the way, 2005 Dead Arm is out – shall I keep a bottle for your vertical?
